Tafraout is a small Berber town located in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas, 130 km south of Agadir. Nestled in the heart of the Ammeln Valley, the city is surrounded by numerous pink granite rocks of various shapes. A grove in the area is home to many argan, olive, and almond trees. Each year, Tafraout hosts the Almond Blossom Festival in winter and the Festival of Lights, “Tifawine.” Despite the harsh environment, the vegetation thrives, giving the area a unique charm, especially from December to February when the almond trees are in bloom.

Tafraout offers many excursions to explore this part of the Anti-Atlas. Walking and cycling are excellent alternatives to 4×4 vehicles for exploring the villages of the Ammeln Valley, discovering rock carvings, and following trails that encircle the village. About thirty kilometers south of Tafraout, the Ait Mansour Gorges can be reached via a winding and surprising road. These gorges open onto a succession of small mountain oases where water is often abundant, creating a fertile valley.

A few kilometers south of Tafraout, the rocks painted by Belgian artist Jean Vérame are located in the village of Agard-Oudad, dominated by a rock known as Napoleon’s Hat for its peculiar inclined shape. The beautiful Ammeln Valley comprises twenty typical small douars clinging to the slopes of Jebel Lekst, forming a magnificent high-altitude grove. Additionally, rock art sites, including gazelle engravings, can be found in the small village of Tazzeka, just 1 km from Tafraout.
